Modern Foreign Languages at Bowburn Primary School
At Bowburn Primary School , French is taught as our Modern Foreign Language . We use a scheme of work and resources from ‘Language Angels’ to ensure the skills and vocabulary are taught in a sequenced way. French is taught from Y3- Y6, however we aim to introduce early foreign language skills in KS1, through greetings, colour and other simple words and phrases.
We believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for the pupils. Through learning French, they are able to develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works, including pronunciation and grammar. They frequently explore differences and similarities between French and English, which also enables them to have a deeper understanding of English.
Learning another language is important, as it raises awareness of the multi-lingual and multi-cultural modern world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others.
